Kirtan-Yogic Singing for Joy
Kirtan is a beautiful and immersive spiritual practice
🙏 What is Kirtan?
Kirtan (pronounced Keer-tahn) is a form of devotional singing and chanting that originated in India. The Sanskrit word itself means "narrating, reciting, telling, or describing," usually an idea or story, particularly in Indian religions.
It is a central practice within Bhakti Yoga—the yoga of devotion—which emphasizes connecting with the divine through love, emotion, and song.
🎶
Kirtan is a communal, devotional singing practice rooted in Bhakti Yoga, known as a "singing meditation." Its defining characteristic is the call-and-response structure, where a leader chants sacred mantras or divine names and the group repeats them, fostering a powerful sense of collective energy and unity. Accompanied by instruments like the harmonium and tabla, the music typically starts slow and builds to an energetic crescendo. The ultimate goal of Kirtan is to use this rhythmic repetition and sincere devotion—focusing on feeling rather than performance—to quiet the mind, elevate consciousness, open the heart, and deepen a joyful, active state of meditation.
